Mizuhou is a "bullet hell" style video game that was developed to research how the promise of a reward would influence players' willingness to tackle higher difficulty levels. The game follows Sirena Cari, a diver who must rescue Chahde, her hunky boyfriend that has been kidnapped by the Queen of the Abyss. As you venture deeper into the sea, you will encounter the Queen's various defenders and potentially recruit them to your rescue team.
Players were given the option to complete a level on an easy or challenge mode. If they were victorious in the challenge mode, they would unlock a new character, though the stats of this new character were not available until after completion. Some players took on these challenge modes out of pure curiosity, while others pursued it to unlock the unique dialogue interactions that came with each character. Those that chose against it did so in order to progress the story under Sirena only, or out of hesitance in their skill level.
As part of the art team, I designed the character portraits and floaters for protagonist Sirena Cari, Level 3 boss Khamara Dae, and side character Chahde Chaedwihk. Additionally, I developed the enemy and bullet assets for Level 3, as well as the controls/pause screen.
Mizuhou was developed in Unity, and it's art was created in Procreate.
